This 30-day African adventure is designed to do exactly that: take you from Tanzania’s golden savannahs to the thunder of Victoria Falls, through the wild waterways of Botswana, and finally to Cape Town, one of the world’s most spectacular coastal cities.
The idea is simple: see Africa’s most iconic places without rushing through them. This itinerary gives you time to settle in, look around, breathe, and truly feel each destination.

Tanzania – where the journey begins
You begin with a few relaxing days at our own Explorer Villa in Dar es Salaam — the perfect place to unwind after your flight. Spend time by the sea, explore local markets and restaurants, and discover that some of Tanzania’s loveliest beaches are found on the small islands just off the coast.
After a gentle start, the adventure continues to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The camps are chosen according to the season, with a focus on excellent game viewing, and the chance to avoid the busiest tourist areas whenever possible.
Tanzania is safari at its most legendary: endless plains, big skies, and wildlife in astonishing numbers. The Serengeti is home to the Great Migration, one of nature’s greatest spectacles, while the Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa inside an ancient volcanic caldera.
In Tanzania, you will travel with a private vehicle and an expert guide,
so every game drive can move at your own pace — whether that means following lion tracks at sunrise or lingering with elephants in the afternoon light.
Back in Dar es Salaam, there is time to relax again before flying onward to one of Africa’s most dramatic natural wonders: Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
The mighty Victoria Falls
Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders” — Victoria Falls is one of the most breathtaking sights in Africa. The Zambezi River plunges into a series of basalt gorges, creating what UNESCO describes as the world’s greatest sheet of falling water.
When visiting the Victoria Falls you can chose to either stay at the Zambia side og the Zimbabwe side as the Falls are shared between the two countries.
The waterfall itself is the highlight, but Victoria Falls is also Africa’s adventure capital. Enjoy a sunset dinner cruise on the Zambezi, take a helicopter flight over the spray, go rafting, have High Tea at Vic Falls Hotel, visit a wildlife nursery, or simply sit back at a riverside hotel and watch the Zambezi drift past.
From here, the journey turns back to safari — but in a completely different landscape. Next stop: Botswana’s extraordinary Okavango Delta.
Botswana – Into the wilderness
The Okavango Delta is one of the few great inland delta systems in the world that does not flow into a sea or ocean. Instead, its waters spread into the Kalahari Desert, creating a lush maze of channels, lagoons, islands and floodplains — a miracle of water in an otherwise dry landscape.
This is Botswana at its most magical: quiet, remote and rich in wildlife. Glide silently through papyrus-lined waterways in a mokoro canoe, listen to birdsong over the reeds, and experience the feeling of being truly deep in the bush.
While in Botswana, you will stay at two different camps to experience more of the delta’s diversity — from water-based safaris to classic game drives across floodplains and woodland.
After the immersive Botswana wilderness, the journey slowly leaves the bush behind and ends in one of the world’s most colourful, beautiful and exciting cities: Cape Town.
Cape Town – history, nature, food and wine
Cape Town has it all: powerful history, dramatic mountains, ocean views, vibrant neighbourhoods, and some of the best food and wine in the world. Few cities combine nature and culture so effortlessly.
You will spend a few nights in the heart of the city, exploring colourful Bo-Kaap, the lively V&A Waterfront and, weather permitting, Table Mountain by cable car or on foot with a guide. A visit to Robben Island adds depth to the journey: Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 prison years there, and the island is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Cape Peninsula is another highlight. Travel towards the Cape of Good Hope, stop in Simon’s Town, and visit Boulders Beach, where endangered African penguins live among sheltered coves and giant granite boulders. With time to stay nearby, you can enjoy the coastline at a slower pace.
From the coast, the scenery changes again as you enter the winelands. Here, rolling vineyards, historic estates and mountain views create the perfect setting for relaxed wine tasting and long, memorable lunches.
Your final stop is Franschhoek, a small town famous for its food, wine and scenery. It is the perfect place to slow down at the end of the journey — cycle between nearby wine estates, stroll through the village, or simply enjoy one last glass with the mountains as your backdrop.
When it is time to travel home, you leave with more than photographs. You leave with the roar of the falls, the silence of the delta, the light of the Serengeti and the flavours of the Cape — lasting memories from a true African adventure.
Best time to travel
Because this journey covers East Africa, Southern Africa and Cape Town’s Mediterranean-style climate, few single month is perfect everywhere. I have placed the itinerary in September because it offers one of the best overall balances: excellent safari conditions, comfortable weather and a beautiful finish in Cape Town.
January and February can also work well, especially for Tanzania and Cape Town. Botswana is in its rainy season then, but showers are usually short and heavy rather than all-day rain, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the wilderness.
The beauty of visiting Africa in the rainy season is the abondance of birds!

My African journey
This itinerary is built from years of travelling through Africa, including several visits to the places described here and three years living in Livingstone, Zambia, right beside Victoria Falls. While I have not travelled this exact route as one single journey, I know these destinations well — and that is why I have designed it to feel inspiring, varied and surprisingly stress-free.
